Pulitzer Prizes for Drama

winner of the first
Pulitzer for Drama, in 1918
The Pulitzer Prize for Drama is one of the original Pulitzers. However, no Drama prize was given in the inaugural awards of 1917; effectively, then, it dates from 1918.

It is presented for a theatrical work staged in the U.S. during the preceding calendar year.

For many years the period was from March 2 of one year to March 1 of the next, to accommodate the Broadway theater season. However, since the 2007 awards it has been regularized to match the calendar year, as do the other awards. (Adapted from Wikipedia)

Finalists have been announced in the Fiction category since 1980. These are indicated with an "F"; winners in the same years are designated with a "W."

In fifteen different years, no award was given. In 1963, according to Wikipedia, "The Pulitzer committee recommended Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, but the Pulitzer board, who have sole discretion in awarding the prize, rejected the recommendation, due to the play's perceived vulgarity, and no award was given instead.

When there was no award given after 1980, some finalists are listed without a winner, as in 1997 and 2006.

You can read more about some of the more recent winners and finalists at the Pulitzer site.
